The §179D deduction is a powerful incentive aimed at improving energy efficiency in commercial buildings. It primarily applies to qualifying energy-efficient systems installed in new construction or major renovations of commercial or government-owned buildings. The Inflation Reduction Act enhanced the 179D deduction by increasing the deduction potential and adding prevailing wage and apprenticeship provisions. Projects meeting these new requirements can max out deductions up to $5.00 per square foot.
The OBBBA has terminated the 179D deduction for all projects that begin construction after June 30, 2026.
